As 5th graders, students go through many changes. In the case of my students, it is their final year in an elementary school. The following year they are going to be attending middle school, which is a whole new world in itself. Students will face peer pressure by those that are older, and from those within the same grade level as well. They will face challenges daily, not only when it comes to school work, but when it comes to interactions with their school mates. They may face pressure by others that cause them to be unkind to others in order to receive acceptance. Wonder is a fantastic book that my students can relate to. It's about a 5th grade boy, who is in a new environment and faces challenges that not a lot of others have to deal with. It is a book that teaches empathy and acceptance. It also shows how treating people a certain way, just because they look different, can have serious consequences on both ends. By donating to this project, you are opening a world in which they get to see life from the perspective of a child who is bullied because of circumstances that he cannot control. This book will be the first book we read as a class, in order to set the tone that intolerance and bullying will not be tolerated in our environment. It will also lead them to have compassion for those around them, and hopefully, lead them to making kinder choices on a daily basis. I would love to set my students on the right path to becoming kind middle school students, who grow up to compassionate and understanding adults. Thank you!
