Our students work hard in the classroom everyday to develop their minds to achieve academic growth. They also need to be able to have a way each day to develop and maintain a level of physical fitness that will help them keep their bodies healthy. Physical Education or PE, is the way that schools help students in this task. A fun and exciting game that keeps students moving and working as a team is the game of Ultimate Frisbee. All you need is a field, cones and Frisbees. We have the first two, but we need a class set of Frisbees. Ultimate Frisbee is a terrific, fun game that fosters teamwork, communication and fair play. This sport has two different teams attempting to throw a Frisbee down to opposite ends of a field to their respective end zones in order to win a point. It requires tremendous teamwork, thereby making every member of the team equally important in order to achieve the goal. All players in the game are responsible for playing fair by calling their own fouls and out of bounds. Both teams learn very quickly that for the fun to continue, they must quickly resolve issues because they referee their own game! Our school has limited resources for PE. Having a set of quality Frisbees is so important for this unit because it will allow students to develop disc throwing techniques that will be evident because the equipment (Frisbees) will respond in a predictable manner. As students' techniques improve, so will the throws. This does not happen with lower quality discs. A class set of Frisbees is the missing piece for a fun and unique way to help my students to develop skills in communication, teamwork and problem solving that will stay with them for a lifetime.
