Last year my students read and wrote about the events and characters from To Kill a Mockingbird. I believe that building upon that reading experience, students will be able to make inferences and connections to events during the Civil Rights Movement. The selection of this novel purposeful because of the way it helped my students build prior knowledge. I am asking for a class set of the book The Help. My vision is to help my students make many connections through reading and writing. Students will infer relationships, identify characterization, and appreciated historical authenticity as presented in both novels. Critical thinking and technology integration will also enhance the novel study in my classroom. My students need exposure to contemporary literature that provides rich and authentic vocabulary and exposure to historical events.
