Flexible choice seating can greatly improve student performance. Students feel powerful when they are given a choice. In our class, we like to sit on the floor, or in a quiet corner or at the teacher table to work. New flexible choice seating can add another layer of choice and responsibility for our students. The futon and ottoman would be used as a gathering for small group collaboration amongst students. Students can use the small stack stools as a seating option for working with the teacher or with a partner. For students who would rather work independently or alone, the Big Joe Bean bag chairs would be an excellent seating option. The ability to choose an appropriate seat in the classroom in which they can collaborate and concentrate is tremendous in second grade! In second grade, we are learning how to become responsible for our learning and that includes where and how we like to learn. Giving students the choice of where they can work becomes a powerful tool in them wanting to actually work and create work they are proud of! The possibilities with flexible choice seating are limitless.Students can move around the room, rearrange furniture to collaborate in small groups or create a quiet corner to work independently.
