Sustained silent reading has been proven to increase student fluency and comprehension. For me, growing up and having access to engaging books was not a problem, I was always reading. However, for my students this is an issue. Giving students a wide variety of books to choose from will increase their engagement. My students will be able to check out these books from our classroom library for independent reading. I grew up going to the library every week, even in the summer. A lot of my students are unable to go to the public library to get books, therefore, they depend on our classroom library for independent reading. My students will visit the classroom library weekly and they will check out 2 books. One being a non-fiction book. With their library books, they will be asked to complete a reader's choice menu on their book. The choice menu will include prompts and projects to complete to deepen their understanding of the text, but also to get them comfortable with the format and tools found within the non-fiction text of Time for Kids readers. It is very important that I provide them with engaging and quality texts. I want these leveled books to foster a love of reading. Please help me build my classroom library.
