These new toys will be used to help my students achieve communication goals outlined on their IEPs. Some of these goals include following directions, building vocabulary, making requests, taking turns with peers, answering questions, etc. All of these skills can be worked on using the magnetic tiles for example. Once we build a box with the magnetic tiles, we can practice following directions with concepts (i.e., Put the bear IN/ON TOP/BEHIND the box), answering questions (i.e., Where is the bear? Who is in the box?), making requests (i.e., I want MORE), etc. Most young children have short attention spans and need a variety of activities to keep them motivated. Having a variety of fun toys and activities to use during therapy sessions helps my students stay engaged and interested in the learning process, which in reality is PLAY.
