BMHS serves students at the long-term juvenile detention facility for South Carolina. Students have a weekly library time where they check-out books and read books and magazines. Modern school libraries search for ways to engage multiple intelligences and learning styles and to develop soft-skills in students. The goal of my program, Game On @ Your Library, is to assist students in developing a variety of soft-skills essential to a successful life. The majority of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and have not been exposed to the benefits of playing board games and working puzzles. These benefits, which include learning to follow directions, developing a sense of fair play, and good sportsmanship, will assist my students both during their incarnation and once they are released. Students will increase their problem-solving abilities, fine motor skills, and visual-spatial literacy while working jigsaw puzzles, tangrams, and Rubik’s cubes. A juvenile detention center is a high-stress environment, and adult coloring books with colored pencils will provide students with a quiet, stress-relieving activity. These games and activities will provide enjoyment and stress-relief for my students while helping them to increase their problem-solving abilities and develop interpersonal skills.
