So many of our students do not see themselves as readers. However, these students feel comfortable grabbing a graphic novel to read. They like the visuals and think they are not really reading. The graphics help our low level readers and second language learners understand the story. When they are reading graphic novels they are using all sorts of reading skills. This will result in our at risk students becoming better readers. We have a wide range of reading levels on our campus so I do need a diverse collection to meet all the needs. I am also trying to create a collection that would enable these students to see themselves in these stories. My goal is for these students to become lifelong readers and I believe that by introducing them to graphic novels they will establish a love for reading that will help them when they leave our campus.
