The past couple of years I have researched student learning styles and the implementation of flexible seating in the classroom. These studies suggested that children who were given short bouts of physical activity within the classroom had more on-task behavior, with the most significant results with students who were most off task originally. I have replaced several of the chairs in my classroom with exercise balls, which allowed many of my students the movement, they needed to be productive, without calling attention to themselves or being a distraction to others. I have minimize the number of desk/tables in the classroom and added study pillows, comfortable chairs, and lap desks, giving students even more choice in where and how they learn. I have found that with flexible seating options, students are able to take control of their own learning, make choices about how they learn best, and who they learn best with. Flexible seating has also shown an increase in student engagement during independent work time and the quality of work my students produce. I am looking to add even more options for my students due to the success I have already seen.
