Book clubs are a fun and collaborative way to interact with novels and my classroom already uses this format. I rotate between a whole class novel, book clubs, and independent choice reading. For the book club portions of the year, students read a certain number of pages every week and then spend about 15 minutes on Friday discussing the book that everyone in their "club" is reading. The club consists of only five students and those five students are reading the same book. This format helps students engage with a wider variety of texts and discuss their reaction and experience with that text to a group. I am requesting new books that consist of more diverse protagonists and books that are from more diverse authors in order to appeal to the wide variety of students in our community. Students will read more if they find the text relevant to themselves and my goal with this project is to provide more relevant reading material with which students can connect.
