Kindergarteners have busy bodies! In order to succeed, students require a learning environment that supports their developmental needs. We currently have stagnant seating - little plastic chairs around rectangular tables that offer no room for movement or motion. Students often opt to work on the floor in order to work comfortably. Study after study shows that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. With this in mind, I hope to provide my young students with seating options like wobble chairs, balance balls and wobble cushions that accommodate their natural need to shift position, rock, rotate, and roll. The Illinois State Board of Education reports benefits of flexible seating including "burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture."
