There's something happening in urban education. I teach 8th grade English at Orchard Gardens Pilot School, a turnaround school in Roxbury (Boston) among the lowest performing in Massachusetts. I am part of a brand new team of teachers brought in from around Boston and the country to turn the school around. We are on a mission to provide a high quality education to the students from low-income communities that attend our school. Less than 20% of the students were Proficient in English/Language Arts during the 2009-2010 school year; I am on a mission to change that.
