My students live in Eastern Kentucky, part of Appalachia, one of the poorer areas in the nation since most coal mining has closed down over the last few years. Poverty has long been known as a factor in the achievement gap of student proficiency and our high school has 74% free or reduced lunch. The school fell to the bottom 5% of the state in 2011, and we have slowly crawled up to proficient status, but still lag in closing the achievement gap. I have been working with seniors to improve their math skills, filling the holes in their knowledge, using a classroom set of Chromebooks and computer based instruction for individual needs.
