Providing my students with an environment that is comfortable and inviting is the first step on their path to becoming lifelong learners. Picture your high school classroom. What do you remember about the room? A typical classroom has desks and chairs lined up in rows and the typical student isn't really interested in sitting in those for the next hour and a half. Your level of excitement about attending classes would have increased tenfold had your teachers had bean bag chairs and exercise balls in their room. This is where flexible seating in the classroom comes into play.
My students need a not-so-traditional classroom that matches their diverse needs and gives them a strong sense of belonging. Kayla Delser's article about the benefits of flexible seating, "include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture". Students are expected to sit at a desk for over an hour at our school. This lack of movement often leads to students who struggle to focus and who sometimes end up falling asleep in class. Flexible seating is the key to student engagement and increasing student interest.
