I have 23 students this year and 2 student dictionaries. As you can guess, it causes a speed bump in our day at times! I teach 3rd grade students in a small mid-western rural community. These students have very limited background knowledge. If they haven't seen it on T.V. or been exposed to it in school... 9 times out of 10 it's new material. They are eager learners and have open hearts and minds. Understanding vocabulary would greatly boost our interest in books that would otherwise be too challenging.
