In order to build background knowledge and support student questioning and curiosity, we want to be able to print objects of interest in three dimensions with a 3D printer and filament. For example, while studying the human body, our 3rd graders would be able to print a hand and examine the work of the joints in the thumb and each finger. Our students are somewhat isolated in our small town setting, and their understanding of abstract concepts and objects that they don't have access to can be limiting. By enabling them to print a 3 dimensional model to accompany their studies, their learning will be more complete. In addition, as we study Native American structures in 4th grade, we could create scale models of each structure to support our learning.
