As a 5th grade inclusion teacher at the Samuel W. Mason School in Roxbury, Ma, I have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of scholars. My scholars and their families live in inner city neighborhoods that represent diverse cultures, languages, and life experiences. Given that I work in an inclusion classroom, I have a group of scholars that have a range of academic strengths and needs. Some of my scholars have learning disabilities and view learning as a challenge. Regardless of the challenges my scholars face in and out of the classroom, they are all eager and resilient. My scholars are ready for a new school year to grow academically, to become more mature and independent, and to develop more social skills as they prepare for the transition to middle school. Together my scholars I have a mission to build a strong community that promotes inclusivity, grit, and critical thinking.
