Our students have been bounced back and forth between online learning and in-person learning. They have been quarantined and have watched as themselves or other members of their families and neighborhoods have contracted COVID. They understand the harsh realities of the pandemic. They have seen their parents worry about working from home or losing a job due to shutdowns. Their anxiety is high and that affects their school work. This was not their choice. They have no control over this and the prolonged stress is eating away at them. Flexible seating allows my kids to make the choices that work best for them. This is something that they have control over. My students are excited to come to school each day. They love getting to choose which type of seating option works best for them. They love being able to choose who they sit by. My parents love that their kids can move away from other students who are distracting them from doing their best work. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at a high table or a low table, sitting or laying on the floor with a clipboard, or sitting on our carpeted kiva. Making sure students are comfortable is something dear to my heart. I also love that I can emphasize that they should be choosing a "smart spot". It helps all of my students to know that I expect that they will work their best and that I expect great things from them. They are more engaged and get more work completed than when they were just sitting at a desk.
