This is the life of almost 200 special needs students at our South Bronx school. Many are dyslexic: they reverse and switch around letters, numbers, and patterns. Their thoughts often get jumbled as they try to communicate. They have ADHD with an attention span that lasts only two to three minutes. They are inner-city high school students living in one of our nation's toughest neighborhoods. Nearly one hundred percent of them live below poverty level. Most of them hope to be the first person in their family to graduate from high school and attend college. The overwhelming majority of our students come from broken or group homes, or have been placed in foster care, and they do not have the means to purchase the most basic school supplies, let alone technology that will improve their memory and academic performance. As their counselor, my job is to help our special needs and disadvantaged students work through and overcome their learning challenges to discover a path to success.
