The new school year is off to an exciting start in my English as a Second Language classroom! Each day I work with more than 60 students in grades 4, 5, and 6 who are at various stages of English language development. This year, I have many newcomers to the United States, who are not only striving to learn English, but also learning how to navigate a very different way of life. Every day my students do double-duty at school - not only are they learning English, they are learning a rigorous curriculum taught to them in English. In addition to this, almost all of my students live in poverty. Yet despite these challenges, my students arrive at school with an incredible enthusiasm for learning. I continue to be in awe of the incredible resilience of these bright, energetic young people I work with every day!
