This past school year was my first teaching kindergarten. It was an exhilarating and eye-opening experience for me. I was surprised every day with how intuitive, caring, and eager to grow my students were. I spent a lot of time formulating how I could best serve them and push them toward the growth they craved. At the same time, I noticed that the materials I had available were not reflecting the beautiful humans I had around me. I started to collect as many diverse books as I could and when I read them aloud the conversations and connections to the stories exploded. Kids who rarely contributed to class conversations suddenly couldn't raise their hands high enough. My current small collection of diverse reads is no longer enough. I want more for my students, so we need the requested books. I want to empower my students with every book I read with them. I want them to see the value in who they are. I want them to know that if they ever feel slighted, left out, or hurt, they have the strength to change the narrative on their own or draw from a community that can help them.
