Literacy is critical to life skills and opportunities Many people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are not exposed to non fiction reading. They usually rely on conversationally language and are lacking in understanding of other content areas. Students use non fiction text as a basis to become better involved in their world. We use Close reading strategies to annotate and interact with the text. All students, especially lower income students benefit from opportunities while interacting with non fiction text, such as newspapers and magazines. Scholastic News magazines will help my students to become active learners by using the on-line resources and the magazines. We will be able to discuss reading that is pertinent to their lives. They can become advocates and learners that are using what they have read to keep up with things happening in their world and become more involved in the real world.
