One area my Hawaiian learners struggle with is getting outside and getting learning into their genetically innovative hands. Hawaiian learners thrive when on the Mauka or Makai side of life (Mountain or Ocean). My goal is to get my learners doing advanced physics, biology, chemistry, environmental science, and algebra while outside in their natural environment for learning. The sports activities I have designed are ripe with math and science integrations and the kids get to have a lot of fun while gathering data and then crunching that data into explanations for why the world works the way it does. Each projects asks the learner to make claims, provide evidences to support those claims and finally provide scientific reasons to support the evidences they collect from their learning lab experiences. For example, In physics, have you ever wondered how powerful your baseball swing is? Well, a simple ball, bat, stopwatch and measuring tape could allow one to calculate that number in Watts of energy per swing at the ball. Another example, would be testing the rate that items fall at according to the Laws of Gravity. Balls of alternate sizes, masses will all have the same rate of descent but students will always tell you that the big one goes fastest. Thus, I can have kids do the science and see for themselves these counter-intuitive science concepts. In biology, running the bases after a big hit will allow us to answer questions about rates of respiration due to exerciser. In anatomy, we use the balls and activities to focus on muscle groups to learn their names, motions, limitations and kinetics.
