Reading brings text to life, and what better way to bring history to life, than to read a historical novel?! Books open up new worlds and possibilities for students. I love introducing historical novels to my students. Stories that tie social studies standards in with our ELA instruction; stories that are entertaining and convey information - at the same time. This amazing group of fourth graders were first exposed to historical novels just recently when we started reading "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I enjoyed watching them as they became more interested in the history behind the story while reading about this semi-fictional character. I would like to be able to provide another opportunity for them to experience historical novels to read and enjoy. In April, I would like to read the novel, "Patty Reed's Doll" with my fourth graders. Our lessons will focus on identifying themes of the book, as well as to truly understand and experience the plight of the pioneers. Having a class set of these books for our study of pioneering life will help my students be able to build depth of knowledge of this historical time, expose them to different genres of literature, and provide them with an opportunity to experience history. In May, I would like to read the novel "By The Great Horned Spoon." This novel will explore life in the time of the California Gold Rush. What better way to experience this than through the adventurous novel about trying to strike it rich in early California. I can't wait to experience reading and learning with our students through these engaging historical novels.
