My students come to school eager to learn in spite of a host of obstacles. They have been diagnosed as learning disabled or autistic and some are labeled emotionally disturbed. These challenges often interfere with the learning process because many are overstimulated for a typical classroom setting. They need movement and tangible objects to assist with remaining on task. I have purchased a few stability balls which later become parting gifts on the last day of school. Although I am not a fan of labels, the demographics of our population do play a factor in student readiness. That is, my students come from low-income environments and many did not begin with English as their first language. These active sitting stools are a welcome reprieve of what otherwise can be a challenging day. These stools are a little something that lets my students know, there are a lot of people in this world that both care and accept that we all learn differently.
