Reading, writing and math are the three biggest challenges my students face each day. Some students are reading on grade level, while others are two, sometimes three, levels below. These Chromebooks can provide my students with additional and engaging practice, that I cannot. We will use these computers everyday to practice reading, writing, and math skills that will empower my students to do their best each day. Most times we are required to borrow computers from another classroom, in a perfect world this would be a flawless system; however, we know a school setting is less than perfect. Usually all the computers are being used by other students in the class. Therefore, my students are not able to practice their basic math, writing, and reading comprehension skills online. Now you maybe asking, why can't you just print worksheets for them to use? Here at Coastal Montessori Charter School, we are striving to use less paper than other schools. In addition to limited availability, I feel I am doing my students an injustice by not providing them with the typing skills they will desperately need in higher grades. A lot of my students have difficulties writing and spelling. A computer would be so helpful for them to see what words are spelled wrong and how to spell them correctly. Typing on a computer versus writing, provides students with the typing practice they need to be successful on state assessments. It also gives them practice for real life situations, such as creating resumes or completing applications. In addition, computers would provide my students with daily math fact practice. So often, students come to my resource room with little to know math fact fluency. Providing them with daily practice will prepare them for multi-step math equations.
