I strive to provide a variety of interesting books in my classroom library. We begin each day with ten minutes of silent sustained reading. The students get so involved in the stories that they do not want to stop reading! I want to provide my students with some new, high-interest titles. I have selected books of varying topics and reading levels so that all students, from SPED inclusion to GT, can enjoy independent reading on their own level. We know student choice is important. Students read more of what they like. Research shows that reading more improves vocabulary, reading fluency, standardized test scores, and writing skills. But reading also teaches us what it means to be human. Reading helps teach compassion and empathy and what it means to put ourselves in someone else's shoes. We don't have a school library or a librarian. These new titles will give them more variety from which to choose. They will be so grateful!
