I teach 8th Grade English in the largest school district in Texas, and the seventh largest school district in the United States. I teach general education, Pre-AP, gifted and talented, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Many of my students attended high performing elementary schools, and have never questioned that they would have access to books, education, or their basic needs. However, a significant, and important population of my students have come to me without adequate literacy skills. My job is to challenge my population who comes to me prepared for more. I have to convince them that it is not enough just to read and write, but that they must question, they must wonder, and they must get confused and frustrated. I also must meet the challenge of inspiring my population who does not know the power of words, who has not found their voices, and who is so confused and frustrated that they gave up long ago.
