"Neuroscientists have found that making music, moving, and creative play develop a brain that is more capable of acquiring language, reading, doing math, planning, creating, focusing, and more." (http://www.rocknreadproject.org/research) My music classes are filled with action songs, singing games, dancing, and musical challenges that keep students excited about their accomplishments. But meeting with many of my students only once weekly limits the impact I can have on their learning. I am building a song-based picture book library, so that children can enjoy the pleasure of singing in and outside of music class, all while increasing their literacy skills through repeated reading. I want to give our kids every chance of academic success they can get, especially when that success can come in fun ways, such as singing along with a picture book and audio recording. Children will be able to check out the sing-along books to read alone or with a buddy in their homerooms. The books I've selected have high quality illustrations and are based on traditional folk melodies and popular tunes that fit the natural lilt of the English and Spanish language. Many of the books come with quality audio recordings, so children can read or sing along without prior exposure to the song or book. Let's get these kids singing!
