Research shows that sitting for extended periods of time is bad for a person's health, especially for children (Levine, 2005; Kravitz, 2009; Reynolds, 2015). If we know this to be true, why is it still the expectation in most schools? My goal with this flexible seating project is to change this expectation in my classroom. We need stools, balance balls, and wobble cushions. Flexible seating will allow my students to choose a learning space that feels safe and comfortable. It will give them an ability to move or shift when needed increasing their engagement. Flexible seating puts the control of education in the hands of the learner, not the teacher.
