I teach first grade in an alternative public school learning program in Oregon. Our program attracts a diverse group of students with a variety of social, emotional, and academic needs. In addition to providing creative academic challenges, our program provides a range of extra curricular experiences that foster personal development and responsibility. We work closely with families to encourage students to be curious, pursue their passions, and maintain a genuine love of learning. This term my first grade class will take a simulated trip around the world to learn how children of different cultures live. We will explore language, dress, food, games, and unique family traditions of children around the world. I would like our study to involve cooking, singing, art, and other hands-on activities that will successfully address my students' individual needs and learning styles, and get them excited about learning.
