My goal in this project is to offer a flexible Language Arts classroom that allows for student choice in what kind of learning space works best for THEM. This type of choice-based learning environment will help my students to work collaboratively, communicate more effectively, and engage in critical thinking. With my 21st century learners, I am striving towards the Starbucks-type atmosphere. While studying at home, students are laying on the couch, on the floor, on their bed, and sometimes at a work desk. I want my students to feel comfortable, safe, and relaxed. Learning environments vary from student to student and my hope is to offer a positive learning atmosphere that functions as a learning-centered area but also creates an environment for continued development of all student types. I hope to provide a variety of comfortable places to work independently as well as collaborate. Currently, I have a small love seat and a reading area with a small rug and a few pillows. Every day some students choose to work at their desks while the rest hurry to the more relaxed spaces. With the Big Joe, saucer, and moveable chairs I will be able to provide more options for all students.
