Many of our students need more than just academic support. Some come to school wanting to give their best but struggle to appropriately cope with feelings of anxiety and stress. Some have experienced trauma and at home crisis. They struggle with behavior regulation. Others struggle with inattention, hyperactivity, and poor focus, and some of our students have difficulty learning and retaining content taught. Regularly participating in yoga and mindfulness techniques is said to increase mental stamina and improve behavior regulation and can lead to better learning outcomes. Through regular yoga practice, our students will learn to be more aware of their feelings and their bodies' responses to these feelings. They will practice calming techniques that can help when emotions are high and increase mental focus. Movement and physical activity is such an important part of learning, yet it is far too infrequent throughout the school day. This program will allow students increased opportunities for daily physical activity. We will utilize short 5-minute yoga activities during classroom transitions as well as longer 30-minute sessions. Having yoga mats for the students will allow them to practice more frequently. We are currently limited to chair yoga and the rare occasions the gym is not being utilized for PE or assemblies. The yoga mats will allow for safe practice in the classrooms.
