All students want to be able to participate in music-making/participation in the music room, but sometimes the overall noise and music-making can be overwhelming to students that have sensory sensitivities. As of now, students have to take their break in the hallway, away from other students and instructors. This is not ideal for students because they are isolated and no longer part of the group. By creating "rest areas" in the classroom, students may go to the center and put on noise reduction headphones and still participate in activities, or decide to take a break and listen to music selections or music books using the cd player. Students may not be able to control the noise in the classroom, but with these "rest areas," they will be able to control how much they hear or what they hear. This opportunity will give students who need to take a break the option of choosing (or being invited) to visit a rest area so that they can get the sensory break they need to be able to rejoin the class in a productive matter. These areas could also be beneficial for students who finish work early or need an extension to a whole class lesson.
