When I walked into my classroom in July for the very first time I was shocked to see that the only books on the shelf were twenty three worn copies of The Call of The Wild. I quickly scrounged what I could from the school's barren book closet and my own personal library, but to my dismay, I knew this collection did not do my students justice.
Learning to love books can change a child's world. Research has shown the amount of independent reading done outside of the classroom has consistently been found to grow vocabulary, verbal fluency, and create background knowledge. Students that are good readers score higher on achievement tests. Stephen Krashen states in his book, The Power of Reading that: “The single factor most strongly associated with reading achievement --more than socioeconomic status or any instructional approach--is independent reading.”
It is my desire as an educator to help my students fall in love with reading and to do that I need books. Help me turn my book barren desert of a classroom into a book oasis wherein I can teach my students that books can take you anywhere.
