My students may not have had the best start, but they have a wonderful opportunity for a better future because our program is taught at a local community college where the students graduate from high school and earn an associates degree at the same time! Many of our students have went on to be the first in their family to do something extraordinary. I have seen amazing results through this program! One thing that differentiates my teaching from a typical math classroom has to do with the fact that I hated school growing up. Due to always moving from city to city, I was almost always the "new kid". Because of this I can relate to many students' apprehensions and anxieties about school, especially when it comes to math. That is why I teach math using video games and other forms of gaming. I have been doing it for over a decade. It breaks down barriers, relieves stress and creates a relaxing and enjoyable environment to learn. The items requested include 3 games that I have played and would love to create lessons around. Scribblenauts, for example, builds vocabulary skills as nearly any word you type comes to life in cartoon form. I will create a lesson based around solving puzzles by conjuring whatever the students can imagine. A puzzle might be "get the cat out of the tree." Multiple words would work. The catch will be each letter will have a point value similar to Scrabble. Each group of students will have to cooperate to find the lowest value solution. The other items are less exciting, but vital to my lessons. I need controllers for the students to use and a memory card to save progress in all of the games. Thank you so much!
