Students need a place to safely talk about matters of equity and inclusion, however they often struggle to find the words to discuss and grapple with such important topics. By providing students with opportunities to read about inequity and lack of inclusion, a platform for meaningful discussion is created and students are able to grapple with powerful issues that plague our society. These books address important matters of equity and inclusion related to teen pregnancy, poverty, the criminal justice system, loss of a loved one, race, and issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community. All students deserve the opportunity to see themselves and their experiences reflected in classroom literature. This project will provide students with various YA books that are reflective of their identities and provide meaningful opportunity to teach and promote inclusion, diversity, and equity, to be utilized in a book club setting during simultaneous teaching and learning (in-person and remote).
