ADHD is becoming more prevalent in schools and affecting student success. Students are having a harder time focusing and being able to concentrate in school. This is an extreme issue at the school I work at with at risk students. With this issue of focus and the ever changing system of education, I am deciding to change my classroom and the dynamics. I am deciding to start the flexible seating journey in my classroom. Changing from traditional seating to alternative seating will greatly benefit all my students. Help me ditch the desks! Not one specific type of seating is appropriate for all students. In my classroom I currently have low seating with pillows, high tables to stand, and rocker chairs. A new type of seating that wobbles will benefit my students who have difficulty sitting still while working for periods of time. Being able to move while work will greatly help my students focus and complete their needed work. The benefits I have seen from my new flexible seating options were immense. The kids had choice in where to sit that benefits them. My kids who were never able to focus, were now able to. Research shows that alternate seating uses up energy, increases engagement, improves posture, and gives better oxygen flow to the brain. I can't wait to add this new seating option to my classroom to help meet the needs of all my students!
