My awesome students have been trying their best throughout this whole transition to distance learning this past spring. I did everything I could to make the transition as smooth as possible. This wasn't an easy task getting all the students on the same page. It was quite daunting. With time, however, each student was able to complete and turn in assignments on their own.
We used a variety of teaching platforms throughout this challenging time and have learned along the way, which ones worked the best. I found out that I struggled the most during instructional time. The students often had a hard time following along as I would be holding up a whiteboard to write on as I was looking into the camera to watch for understanding. It was very awkward as well.
Our school is also a language academy and we teach a lot of students who are new to the country. As you can imagine, this was a challenge throughout distance learning.
As this COVID does not appear to be winding down anytime soon, I am preparing for the unknown. After doing some planning, I realized a document camera would really help guide my teaching practices during instructional time and review. Students would have a visual to follow along with their own work. My EL students would then be able to follow along as well. This would be a great addition to promote a positive learning environment for all my students.
