I deeply believe representation in literature matters and that if we want our kids to love reading, they need to see themselves in what they are reading. Whether it is through the characters, a setting, or a theme, students being able to relate and connect to literature is important. I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is a beautifully written novel that is incredibly relevant to the lives of my students. The book taps into so many issues my students can relate to: grief and loss, parental expectations, self-acceptance, immigration, LGBTQ+ issues, economic disparity, gender roles, first love, and so much more. It will also allow my class to have a much needed dialogue on the importance of mental health and de-stigmatizing anxiety and depression. I feel that my students are not going to be able to put this book down! My class has the privilege to be partnered with Steppenwolf Theatre's young adult program and in March we are going to see the world premiere adaptation of this amazing novel. I want my students to have not only read the novel before we see the play, but I want them to be able to have their own copy in the book. I want them to write in it, share it with their siblings and friends, keep it and add it to their growing personal libraries.
