As a first year teacher, I have been using a lot of my own resources to help students understand more complex mathematical ideas. A lot of students come in with preconceived notions of math being hard, or they're not going to understand math. Especially by 6th grade, students have already categorized in their minds if they are good mathematicians or not. I want to break that.
I want all students to realize their potential in mathematics. For my classroom, I will need many items to make this a reality. Of them, I have included a color printer. The color printer will help my students have vibrant materials, customized game boards, and a chance to print any materials(such as homework assignments or visual representations they made need). Another item my students will need are cuisenaire rods. Cuisenaire rods are a hand-held visual tool to help students understand mathematical concepts. Cuisenaire rods can help my students understand foundational concepts like division, multiplication and fractions in a more tangible light. As a new teacher, my classroom came as is. I currently have cabinets with missing doors. These cabinets have the students books exposed. To solve this issue, I am requesting curtains to protect my students math books. This will show my students that their possessions are respected and hidden. This will heighten the level of trust and respect shown in my classroom.
My classroom is inclusive to all my students despite their abilities, ethnicity, religion or gender. I believe with proper coaching students can achieve great things. However, coaching is not enough alone. With the help of carefully selected tools and crafted games that are secretly math practice, my students will have a greater chance getting involved with in their curriculum.
