With the needs of students evolving, so must the structure of the classroom. Providing my students flexible seating options can positively impact the academic and emotional needs of my students. For example, rather than being stuck at a desk and chair, students will be provided options that are more conducive to their learning style. This may look like students sitting on stability balls rather than standard chairs, kneeling at tables rather than sitting upright, or standing up to complete their work. The NEA Today states, "We know that breaks and interruptions after periods of focused activity actually helps in learning, yet we ask our students to sit still for an hour or more with little freedom of movement...I've come to the conclusion that desks promote compliance, while coffee shop-style seating encourages community-building through increased and intentional emphasis on communication and collaboration."
