If my project is funded we are going to create an indoor classroom garden. Students will be able to grow plants from seeds in their own individual pots and be responsible for the care, feeding, and watering of their plants by using watering cans, spray bottles, and Miracle Grow plant food. Our herbs are going to be put into the small individual pots and hung on a tension rod with the binder rings that will hang in our window in order to get plenty of sunlight. As a classroom, we are going to grow tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos in pots that will sit on the window sills in my classroom. The self-watering bulbs will help with weekend watering. At the end of the school year when our plants are grown, we are going to enjoy the fruits of our labor and use the vegetables and herbs to make our very own fresh salsa. My students will be able to see and experience the process of growing a plant from a seed by using the cilantro seeds in their mini flower pots. By experiencing the germination process, the flowering process, pollination, sprouting, and finally harvesting our fruits and vegetables, my kids will be able to have firsthand knowledge of how to grow a garden. Especially when students live in an urban setting, it is crucial that they experience the process of small scale agriculture in order to be able to have the knowledge of growing and maintaining a small garden of their own. The fact that they will get to eat and enjoy the food that they have grown will further cement the experience in their lives and create a thirst for more information about gardening.
