Nonverbal students need to experience repeated readings with picture reinforcement to improve verbal skills. The books selected line up with thematic units reinforcing common vocabulary to increase opportunities for practice while using the reinforcement of picture cards within the texts to help identify important vocabulary. Students will be immersed in different books that use repeated vocabulary to help increase their exposure to words in different contexts to generalize vocabulary to real life. The more we use the vocabulary in different ways, the more it is reinforced and students are able to make connections to their life and the outside world. Vocabulary builds communication and helps students communicate with their classroom staff, other students, and their families.
