When you were in school, would you have liked to have a choice of where to sit? Were you comfortable while you did your work? I want to provide my students with that opportunity. I want to make my classroom a place where students are happy, engaged in their learning, and relaxed because this will make them feel safe to explore and participate more during our lessons. Having flexible seating gives students ownership of their classroom and gives them the chance to choose where they will be more comfortable during their learning times, as well as it keeps them from fidgeting and playing around trying to get comfortable. With flexible seating options, students choose where they want to sit, but wherever they choose to sit, it has to help them be their best learning. Students can move the furniture based on their needs which in return motivates them to be more attentive, do better work and be more engaged. Many classrooms presently do not cater to our ever changing learning environment. Children now encounter new ways of learning. We use more technology, we collaborate more with each other, we require critical thinking and creativity, but if students are not feeling at ease and comfortable, and are not allowed to easily more around, they are not focusing on what they are learning, instead they might be thinking of how uncomfortable the seat is and how they are bound by one type of seating arrangement. "Just as adults don’t sit still at their desks all day, kids shouldn’t be expected to either," says Charles Hillman, a professor in kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With flexible seating, students are more comfortable and become more committed to learning.
