Keeping a student’s attention on school work can be difficult for any teacher, but for the teacher of students with learning disabilities this can be even more challenging. Almost all of the students in my class have decreased muscle tone or a constant need for movement that makes it tough for them to engage in learning. Active seating promotes small movements while sitting; these movements keep the body more engaged, and moves more oxygen to the brain. With more oxygen, brain function increases, allowing for improved focus and better knowledge retention. Providing options for active seating such as stability stools and cantilevered chairs allows students the opportunity to put their energy into learning rather than expending their energy trying to get their brains and bodies ready to learn.
