As an English teacher I have a passion for language and literature but I have recently evaluated my curriculum and reviewed the available materials I have at my disposal and it is clear that I lack a contemporary, minority voice. I wish to teach my students through the eyes of all people, but I have all too often taught only through the eyes of the old white male. In this project I have selected 3 novels for use in my classroom, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Sula by Toni Morrison and The Sellout by Paul Beatty. These novels offer 3 very different perspectives on the struggles of race and equality. Coates and Beatty share the mutual conflict of living as a black man in modern America, yet their voices could not be more different. Coates writes in a non-fiction format, directing his words to his son while Beatty uses fiction, satire and humor as a way to emphasize the issues he faces. The last novel I selected was a brief novel by the renowned Toni Morrison who shows the female perspective to this very real and very challenging struggle. I hope to use these novels in a book circle format. I will assign different novels to different groups then have students share what they learned through small group and in class discussions. Students will be able to share quotes from their different novels, discuss the different perspectives, and learn from each other all while having the chance to hear from a voice that is all too often forgotten or silenced.
