Collaboration is an essential skill in today's educational landscape as well as the world around us. In my classroom, collaboration is one of the most important skills I teach my students. Movement and flexibility is key to collaboration. The current desks I have in my room don't serve that purpose well. The chairs are attached, meaning students are only able to enter from one side of the desk. When the desks are put into groups to try collaborating, it barricades some of the students into their desks. This is especially troublesome for my students who crave movement. The addition of this classroom furniture will help my students in their attempts at collaboration. Just the physical layout of tables makes collaboration easier, but the addition of the markerboard tops will even make a greater impact. Students can plan out projects, brainstorm ideas, make connections, and more right on the table so everyone can easily see. It makes their learning visible. Not only will these tables and chairs help collaboration, but they will also be beneficial to the students who just can't sit still in a cramped desk all day. The fact that the chair is not attached to the table gives them more freedom to move. The exercise balls and chairs also help students who just need to fidget a little to focus. These tables and chairs will make such a difference in my classroom environment, giving all my students the chance to be successful in a collaborative world.
