Studies show that children who have the opportunity to listen to reading have a higher chance at learning to love reading. My students need that spark of hearing a story read aloud to really pull them into the magnificent world of reading. Headphones for students to listen to and watch read-alouds of books of their own choice and interest are exactly what my students need to spark a love a reading. I am blessed with 10 energetic, loving, young students who have the desire to read; however, they just need an extra link to draw them into the magical world of books. My students would headphones alongside the iPad application called "Epic!" Epic is an app that hosts over 500,000 books for children and tailors their individual profiles to each students' interests. The app is a student favorite in my classroom; however, all of my students are begging every day to listen to stories. Studies show that students learn more vocabulary by listening to new vocabulary. My lower-leveled reader would benefit from hearing the text as they see it highlighted in the books and my higher-level readers would benefit from hearing the correct pronunciation of more difficult and new words. In addition to headphones being wonderful for students to listen to stories, another hidden benefit would be the help they lend to students while they are testing and working on iPad activities. Some of my students are great at math and really understand science - until the reading becomes higher level. Due to a lower reading level, some students are usually great in math are unable to comprehend questions on a test or activity because of the reading portion. If students have headphones to listen to the questions, directions, and activities, the gap between reading and arithmetic would be closed.
