Our high school library is outdated and lacks functionality in the 21st Century. While students do pass through the doors daily to check out books, work on their online class, or hang out during lunch, these kids are sitting at tables from the 1980's and looking around for a place to plug in their phones. Students come in daily during lunch, but everything on their tray gets thrown away regardless of being true waste or a pop can. And while our numbers on students utilizing the library are okay, the community could use some growth in the numbers department. We are seeking funding to update aspects of the library to reflect the 21st century, which we believe will encourage students to turn to the library when they are looking for a place to collaborate, work, or hang out and visit with friends. We would like to make strides to become a more sustainable school and that can start in the community center that is the library. With labelled recycling receptacles, students will be encouraged to be more aware of their habits and show them what small steps can be taken to promote sustainability. We would also like to bring a multi-station charging station to the library for student use. Students use their phones throughout the day in their classwork whether for review or reference and it can be an issue when the phones die. In order to combat that, and bring more students into the library for community building, we would like to be able to fund one of these charging stations. With these two improvements we believe we will be taking a step in the right direction in updating our school library.
